"Years ago I got a recipe from a magazine – Good Housekeepng or Better Homes and Gardens perhaps – for a square chocolate nutmeg cake frosted with chocolate butter cream frosting and then using marzipan – making “ribbons” and a bow from marzipan to make the square cake look like a package with ribbons. I'm looking for a recipe that was in Cosmopolitan Magazine back in the late 60s/early 70s: High Rise Apple Pancake. You made it in the oven in a skillet, with apples, orange juice, vanilla, eggs, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice...it was easy to make and delicious-perfect for a brunch. Help! Thanks.
When I was a child, my family always celebrated birthdays with a rum cake from an Italian bakery near my house. It was unlike any "rum cake" I have never encountered since. It had several layers, each one different - chocolate cream, red fruit jam, custard cream, rum-soaked yellow cake. I think there were seven layers in all. The icing was a sweet cream icing, and the sides were coated in something slightly crunchy and sweet; I remember it tasting like almonds. I don't know if this is a classic Italian recipe or if it was created at that bakery, but it was a truly heavenly cake! If anyone has ever seen or read a recipe like this, I would be very grateful to have it. I've missed those cakes like you wouldn't believe, as the place closed around thirty years ago.
My mother has been trying to find her long lost Red Velvet Cake recipe for the last 30 years. She remembers making it in the late 50's and the recipe was on the cake flour box. (She has written to both Soft-a-silk & Swansdown to no avail.) The recipe did not have cocoa in it. She remembers souring the milk with vinegar, separating the eggs, beating after each egg was added, and red food coloring (probably why the recipe was removed from the box). The whites were folded in at the end. It had chocolate squares (instead of cocoa) that had to be melted. It was baked in a 9 x 13 pan.

There is a recipe for date nut bars that was on the box of a date bread mix. My mom used to fix it every christmas during the 60's. It had lemon glaze on top and was delicious. I don't think it was written out because she just purchased the mix whenever she wanted to bake it. I would love to find the recipe from someone who was prudent enough to save it. I have not found it on on the back of any current mixes seen in the store.
